What is Expressive Arts Therapy?
Expressive arts therapy is an inter-disciplinary modality combining psychotherapy and the creative arts. At the heart of expressive arts therapy is the Greek word poises, meaning "the activity in which a person brings something into being that did not exist before." The therapist supports the client bring into existence something from inside them, externalize it and then respond to it. This process can be deeply transformative and healing.
Together with Adriana you will explore:
Ritual - Rites of passage, endings, beginnings, unions and loss. Language Arts - Poetry, journals, short stories. Visual Arts - Painting, collage, clay, drawing. Dramatic Arts - Drama, story telling, clowning. Movement & Sound - Breathwork, body awareness, mindfulness, music, sound bathing, dance. Symbolic Worlds - Sand tray, play therapy. |
What can expressive arts therapy help me with?
Expressive arts therapy can help you with:
Trauma - Working in a trauma informed way, your expressive arts therapist will guide you through the creative process of unpacking your trauma. Using metaphors, imagery, architypes and symbols we dive in with a safety line and slowly unravel the past. Trauma can look like many things including rejection of your identity, neglect, violence, oppression, lack of safety and more. For some, traditional talk therapy has not been effective in releasing energy stuck during a traumatic event. Expressive arts therapy is a beautiful alternative because we are moving out of our survival response (fight, flight, freeze) and into a healing space.
Creative Blocks - Every human has the gift of imagination and creativity; however, those waters can experience blocks from time to time. If you are missing your creativity, expressive arts therapy can help you connect back to your process and naming your blocks.
Inner child - Re-connecting to our inner child often involves moving from your head to your heart and body. Pre-verbal trauma means we cannot process with the logical part of our brain, we must go into the body and play.
Life changes - Marking the big moments in our lives with ritual and rites of passage has been around since time immemorial. The western world seriously lacks in these ceremonies, apart from those deeply embedded in patriarchy and heteronormativity. So why not create your own to mark a start, an end, a union or a loss. Some examples of life changes are gender affirmations (transitions, chosen name ceremony/ burring dead name), break ups, union to yourself, best friend ceremonies, abortions, etc. You get to decide what are important chapters in your life.
Self Expression - For anyone who has struggled to find the words, hear their voice, understand their needs. Expressive arts therapy is all about self expression from small gestures to group psychodramas. Expressive arts therapy validates your experience, cheers you on and boosts you up.
Access the Subconscious - Expressive arts therapy is rooted in Jungian philosophy. We are connected to one another, our ancestors, the land and the universe. Working with your unconscious helps you understand your cycles, patterns, false believes about self and stuck trauma in a holistic way.

About Adriana Lademann
Hello!
My name is Adriana Lademann (they/them) and I am very excited to meet you.
Feeling our emotions is a daily ritual we all practice and it looks different for each of us. Many of us did not have teachers who shared the skills to name our feelings, accept them and move them through our bodies. Many of us learned to hide or mask our feelings because they were too much or not enough. So we burred them deep in our bodies and grew accustom to the discomfort.
We honour this process because it got you HERE.
Now, as adults, we have the opportunity to teach ourselves that our emotions are not the problem. Emotions are simply information the body is giving us about a situation. Emotions are not good or bad, they are just responses. So today, I offer you a stage to let some of those emotions go.
Art is a safe vessel for even the most difficult emotions. Working together, we will create a custom experience that will help you name, accept and move through your emotions. Art can help you externalize the emotions, hold it in a way we cannot. Once outside the body we can then use our logical mind to respond to your creation.
I want to help create room for your sadness, for your anger, for your grief.
I want to help create expansion for your joy, your euphoria, your love.
I want to help create a world where your imagination is let loose.
I want to help create a space where healing is possible.
