CARLY WHITAKER-WILSON(she/her) MA. RTC. Expressive Arts Therapist, Self-Care Enthusiast. KAERY MCDONALD(she/her) Expressive Arts Therapist, Earth Activist. ABOUT In this workshop, we explore the concept of Solistalgia and its relation to ecological grief. “Solastalgia is defined as the distress caused by the unwelcome transformation of cherished landscapes resulting in cumulative mental, emotional and spiritual health impacts” [1.Galway]. We are seeing stories almost daily of the impacts of climate change around the world. This summer we witnessed the disaster of forest fires, droughts, and the endangerment of our old growth forests. These images can leave us feeling furious, lost, scared and frozen. The impact of climate change on our mental health is evident. This workshop aims to help us name and move through some of these emotions. Beginning with a sound journey, you will travel to the place where you feel solastalgia. We will dive into art making and play with movement to explore how we may embody the journey from grief to hope and everything in between. Finally, we will close with a writing exercise to cultivate love and action. Our hope is to help folks address their feelings of ecological grief, move through some of it and land in a more hopeful place. Solistalgia takes place indoors and masks will be required as per BC Health authority mandate. Accessibility: Workshop space has a main entrance way at ground level. The path to the studio is not paved, but flat. Space accommodates 10. Washroom on site. Galway L.P., Beery T., Jones-Casey K., Tasala K. Mapping the solastalgia literature: A scoping review study. A ritual for Grief: Letting go with Lilac flower essence
June 14th 2018 5pm Description: This event takes place on the ancestral, traditional, and unceded homelands of the Musqueam, Skxwú7mesh, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples. This is a ritual for Grief: Letting go with Lilac flower essence. This ritual is a combination of magic and expressive arts. The intention is to to ask the flower essence of the Lilac tree to help us to honour and let go of a grief we are ready to pass. Grief comes in many shapes and forms. We will do a combination of ritual, art making, guided meditation, drinking lilac flower essence, writing, sharing our art and responding to each other. There will be time once the ritual is closed to speak about your experience in regular language. Lilac essence was was made by Adriana with loving intentions during the waining moon. Also infused with a amethyst and mangano calcite. You should wear comfortable clothes and bring a mat to lay on, a blanket and a pillow. If you want a healthy snack to share with the group is always good! All materials will be provided. Starhawk says on grief:” Loss can deepen us or diminish us. Grief can intensify our connection to life, or drain our vital energy. To grow from grief, we need to understand and honour the grieving process.” This ritual is for those ready to let something go. If your grief is fresh, this may not be the right ritual for you. Make sure to really check in with yourself and ask “am I ready to let this go?” It’s ok to not be ready. Grief cannot be hurried. The entire session will be roughly 3 hours. Best to give a bit of a window at the end, and try not to make plans after. You may feel very tired by the end. |
